I photograph cake smash sessions in the same way I approach all of my work — quietly observing and letting things unfold as they are.
They’re a way of marking your baby’s first birthday without over-directing anything. Some babies dive straight in, others take their time. The curiosity, the reactions, the mess — it all becomes part of the story.
The setup can be kept simple, or we can introduce something more personal, from soft, minimal styling through to gentle themes like boho, rainbow or something a little more playful.
First birthdays are so special. These sessions are a chance to pause and document it as it really is — and when it’s all over, I’ll take care of the clean-up.

What is a cake smash?
A cake smash is a first birthday photoshoot where your baby is given a cake and space to explore it in their own way.
We usually start with a few simple, clean portraits before the cake — just a chance to capture those calm, pre-cake moments. Then the cake comes in, and your baby leads the way. Some dive straight in, some take their time. The curiosity, the reactions, and the inevitable mess all become part of the story.
At the end, we can finish with a splash bath — a playful way to wrap things up, capture a few final joyful moments, and leave everything tidy.
The aim is simple: capture this stage as it really is, without forcing it, while keeping everything light, considered, and easy to look back on.
How our Sessions work
Pre shoot
For sessions that include pre-photos, we start with a few simple portraits before the cake. These are calm, natural shots where your baby can settle in, explore, and show off their personality. It’s a gentle way to capture those first moments and little expressions before the cake comes out.
Cake Smash
Then comes the main event. Some babies dive straight in, others take their time — either way, I follow their lead. The curiosity, the reactions, and the inevitable mess all become part of the story. I capture the playful, joyful moments exactly as they happen.
Splash
For Luxe (Classic) and All-Inclusive sessions, we finish with a short splash bath. It’s a fun, relaxed way to wrap things up, often producing some of the happiest images of the session — and it helps leave your little one clean after all the messy fun.

Every session is led by your baby — I’ll capture the curiosity, the reactions, and the messy, joyful moments as they happen. There’s no rush, no pressure, just time to enjoy this milestone and record it in a way that feels genuine.
Sessions are relaxed and tailored to your little one, so whether they dive straight into the cake or take their time, we’ll capture it all. By the end, we can finish with a splash bath if you’d like — and I’ll take care of the clean-up.
If you’d like to have the images ready before your baby’s first birthday, for example to use at a party, it’s best to allow around two weeks for editing.
